Just bought a Bristlenose calico pleco

A tip from my own BN experience....mine LOVES brown algae. I have a tank that gets a lot of direct sunlight with lots of PVC pipe for my ropefish. The pipe grows tons of algae and i rotate it into the tank with the BN's after the pipe is covered. The pair of them strip a 2 foot section totally bare in about 7 hrs. So if you have any tanks that get direct light culturing algae for them might not be a bad idea.

Looks good. It might be a marble (calico) BN but it also looks like a regular brown BN as well. Either way he looks good, great bristles on him. Get him a mate soon.

I hope you don't mind if I add my 2 cents worth. I just thought I'd let you know that he is in fact a CALICO BN Pleco. He is an Ancistrus species similar to the Gold (L144). If you google the L144, he requires the same care. It's very difficult to find any info on specifically the "Calico". He should max out between 4.5 and 5.5 inches. He likes cooler temps avg 72-79 [FONT='Arial','sans-serif']°F ; pH 6.5-7.4 ; KH 6-10[/FONT]
And if you'd really like to see him do back flips, cut the seeds out of a long, quarter cut peice of zucunni, stick it with a fork or something to sink it, and drop it in. Or the other favs are "green giant" french cut green beans or steamed peas, squeezed out of the skin.
My most successful spawns happen in large barnicles and moonsnail shells. I have a female calico and i'd give my right arm for a male. I've been looking for a LONG time.
I also breed, long fin albino bushy/bristle noses, Gold with black eys and silvertips. They're a LOT of fun. I hope you really enjoy him...
And oh.. he is a VERY handsome adult

Thank you for all that added info.. he is doing great ..i do give him zucchini but i will also add the other veggies..i have him in a planted tank with guppies and another baby royal pleco..i have them together for quite a while now and see them have a few spats but nothing that adds up to anything..i quess eventually when royal gets bigger i will move him.. i love him..and i hope to find a female soon.. good luck looking for your male..i thought he was calico because the guy i bought him from knew his plecos .,,but glad to hear it from you... where do i find moonsnail shells?

Hi, I forgot to add one of the most important things... He MUST have driftwood. They require it as part of their diet. They rasp on it and it helps to aid digestion.

I scuba dive for them. When I was looking for more, I put an add on my local classifieds forum. Just so you know, the shell will break down in your water and potentially increase your PH, so watch your params. If you add driftwood, it neutralizes the ph increase of the shell. Try the clay pot, abs pipe and slate caves if you can't find moonsnail shells. Barnacles also work for my guys.
