You must be pretty good with flowerhorns. I have seen some ugly babies turn out to be masterpieces.

Care to share the wisdom?
If you have a better solution to the problem feel free to post. With 23 flowerhorns I felt selecting the better ones would increase his odds. If you want him to keep the ugly ones thats cool i was just giving my opinion.

You Rockbass are the one that can tell what a fry will turn out like, not me.

I just wanted you to clarify how that works.

Me and my uncle plan to wait till they all get to be roughly 1 inch... pick the 4 best looking ones and sell the rest either back to the fish store or to others who are interested... we have four 33 galon tanks awaiting the ones we do keep. i've kept flowerhorns for 5 years so i know what i'm doing.
Your going to need a much bigger tank flowerhorns grow rather rapidly search around for at least a 90 gallon. I wouldn't keep more than 1 or 2 even in a 90 because of aggression.

I got 8 in a 240, they do fine

With 23 flowerhorns hes better off picking better looking ones. Not all ugly ducklings turn out be swans. When you have that many you can't take your chances on the trab looking ones turning out to be show winners. I would pick the better looking fry because at least then I know I'm ending up with a decent one. Picking out the 4 ugly ones and having them stay ugly would be a bad choice in my opinion.
Let me give you a scenario. Would you go with a girl that has an A cup in hopes they turn out to be D's? or would you go with a girl with a C cup and be already be half way there?
Thats just how I see it. Picking the better looking fry and already knowing I'm at least on my way, rather than praying my ugly duckling turns out to be a swans.

So your technique is not an exact science as you implied earlier?

I don't see you reverse with any better advise other than lets roll the dice in hope for the best.
Do you have any better advise than lets hope for the best and choose the ugly ones? rather than pick the good looking ones and endup at least decent? The kids newer to the hobby so lets roll the dice in his favor. Lets have him pick the best looking fry.
Maybe when he puts the remaining 19 on the buy/sell forum you can somehow pull the longshot and prove me wrong but even then all you did is beat the odds.

You were the one implying that you had a method to pick out the best as fry. A better method would be to grown them all out, then pick- which reverse suggested. Why roll dice at all? Grow them all out then pick.
