Just bought about 11-12 guppies, and I am very eager to breed them, how do i tell if they are male and female and what should my water peramiters be? Temperature Ect. I cant wait to see small fry! :)

Kepp your ph high, around 7.5 and the temperature high too (around 82). They like a little salt, but I'm not an expert with adding salts and am not really sure how much you should have for guppy's. Hopefully an expert will chime in. The guppy's should have about 30 live babies every month. Have spawning matts and small-leafed plants in the tank for all the babies to hide. Mine take finely crushed flake right away, so you don't need to worry about special foods. (the babies that is)

If you have fancy guppy's, the males will have the long, colorful tails. That's not always sure-fire though. You can also tell by looking at the anal fin. (this is definite) The female will have a rounded anal fin and the male will have a more pointed one.

I just read that you should not add salt if you plan on breeding them. (which you obviously are) Salt can prevent the parents from breeding and may cause the fry to die young.

Actually it is very easy to breed guppies as they tend to al ready be preganent when you purchase them.

^^I agree, guppy's are probably the easiest to breed. I think females can spawn like 4 times without a male because they store the sperm.

If he hasn't bred them before, I'll bet he's got more males than females- newbie looking for the "pretty" ones.

:ROFL:I used to do that.

If you do have more males than females either return some males or buy more females, you want to have more females than males.

try to have 4 or 5 females per male. Males have the big fancy tales, females look plainer with smaller tails

This is ideal, but I generally have 2 or 3 females to a male. (I don't know why, but this is what I've been doing since I was 7.) It's important to have 2x more females than males.

if 2 or 3 works for you, perfect. There is no set rule, just my suggestion
