oh.. one big question. i was at the LFS i normally buy Bio-Spria from and they said that Marineland has merged with another company and they will no longer be selling Bio-Spira but will be selling a beneficial bacteria product that doesn't need to be refrigerated and is on the shelves in the store with the other chemicals and such.

End Quote

I spoke with marineland and they said they actully stopped making bio-spira, and this was a couple months ago that I talked to them, not telling how long its been out of production. The new product it called safe start by terta. Oh when I heared they stopped making bio spira I was worried I was buying realy old stuff, I was told the shelf life is over 1 year; *if stored correctly*

Marineland confimed safe start works just like biospira without needing to be stored cold.

i guess when i get paid i'm going to that LFS i don't like and buying their entire stock of Bio-Spira. along with the Gh and Kh test kits i can't find anywhere else and have been avoiding going to their store for.

time to start calling around the the LFS's and see who has Bio-Spira still. i have lots of refrigerators.. i can dedicate one to fish supplies if i have to.

UPDATE on my disaster last night: Kabota is looking healthy and normal, he's got just a touch of gill curl out of the experience, but we'll be doing a major water change on his new tank today.. and a touch of pimafix and we'll cross our fingers. I can deal with a tiny bit of gill curl as long as Kabota is still with me. i have to do water testing still, but the catfish tank is clear and Lucy is breathing normally, but she seems upset that she is the only fish in the tank now.

it's not a happy ending.. but it could have been far worse.. and i'm very thankful for being able to save Kabota and Lucy.

You shouldn't need bio-spira one your tank is established....

scott,

Bio-Spira is great for establishing tanks..

AND...

it helps you recover a tank that has crashed for whatever reason, a large water change, remove whatever caused the crash to begin with (in this case is was rotten smelt), and the appropriate amount of Bio-Spira and you can have your tank back running smoothly, and cycling in a day. Makes ya lose fewer fish that way.

i ALWAYS have at least 1 tube of Bio-Spira in my fridge.. and if it's going away i'm going to find all i can or can afford and make sure i don't have to buy a Tetra product for as long as possible.

Bio-Spira IS getting harder to find. My LSF has plenty but they are the only ones around that still do. Why are you anti-Tetra? I use API for chem but what's wrong with Tetra products?

I'm leary of any company that makes processed unrecognizable food with quesionable ingredients. and then takes our one reliable source of safe active beneficial bacteria and turns it into just another bottle of chemicals on the LFS shelf.

i also shy away from Hikari products because of this. But Hikari also sells actual frozen real food, Tetra does not.
