I had a O. vulgaris 20 years ago that laid eggs in my tank. She would take fish and shrimp from my hand, but wouldn't come out of her cave. She tended the eggs constantly swirling her tentacles around them. Unfortunately, the brine shrimp didn't hatch when they did and of course she died a week or so later. It was very cool to watch the baby octopi jet around the tank.
When they mate, the male deposits a sperm packet in the female's mantle. She keeps it until the water conditions are right then breaks it and fertilizes the eggs. Go figure, the right water conditions were in a tank with crushed coral and just an UGF.
