Chlorine also kills bacteria, that your fish need. Oscars and plecos are pretty hardy fish but just because they survive doesn't mean it should be repeated. Ever test your ammo readings a few hours or the day after a WC with no dechlor?

I accidently used water clear instead of dechlorinator once wiped out a whole schol of caribie.........both were API bottles.

The harms of chlorine can be terrible - as inluded to in a previous post chlorine can kill cycled bacteria not just by forgetting to dechlorinate but also by too massive of a water change like 60-70-80-90 or 100%..........the dechlorinator might not work fast enough to stop a complete tank cycle crash.

This is why some fish dont get to full size or age. just because it does not kill them does not mean it is an acceptable practice.

this is why i have my own ro/di unit. All i do is filter the water into a barrel and when im ready to do a water change i just use it directly out of the barrel. No chemicals. No bacteria. No problems.
Yes some units are expensive. Check Ebay. My first ro unit was a 4 stage 50 gal per day unit. $44.95 plus free shipping. very basic unit, but had instructions of how to put it together.

Sorry about you fish loss.

Sometimes when I'm doing WC's in the fishroom I forget if I put declor in the tank yet (I have different tanks draining and filling at the same time.) I get OCD about it and usually end up giving all the tanks another dose.
