I go both ways...

Although I would love the luxury of not cleaning all the sand and deco.. it has to be eye appealing to me..

I go with the decorated look well I like to see the fish move around and between things in the tank. I also have a wide range of size fish so the little ones do need a place to hide. Tho I have noticed the bigger my tank gets the less I use gravel and sand

I HATE bare tanks. I also hate tackily decorated tanks with scuba men and sunken ships. I try to set my tank up to look as close to a pond/river as possible. I have also found this has allowed me to keep fish together you wouldn't think would work (small schooling fish, with larger native ones) as the decor provides natural protect to the small fish.

My oscar is set up in a 75 gallon with an inch of black sand, a small piece of driftwood and a dozen or so small river stones. I like that it provides a little backdrop while still keeping focus on the fish, where it should be. Eventually, though, I'm going to set up a 6 ft Malawi Cichlid tank that'll be heavier in decor. Depends on the fish I suppose.

Depends on what you mean by "decorated".
I prefer a natural setup with sand/gravel, rocks, wood, and plants... not too busy, not symetrical, no decorations like the kind you can buy at a pet store... just as natural looking as possible.
That's my vote.
If I have plant-eaters or diggers, then everything but the plants.

It all depends on what you are doing with your fishes. When I kept fishes for fun and watching, then my tank was decorated and had lots of gravel and rocks.

Now I only have breeders and so my tank is bare, except for the few grains of gravel I couldnt get when I cleared out the decors/gravels. Breeders HATE gravels...my Red Tiger pair pushed all the gravel up against the tank about 3-4" high. The tank looked Stupid so I got rid of the gravel.

How do you figure they hate it? Gives them something to do, it's natural behavior.
Personally, I keep fish to try to replicate a slice of nature in my home. I keep fish in biotope specific setups. No bare tanks in my home unless it's a quarantine tank.

Thanks for all the replies so far... Seems theres more people than i expected that actually like barebottom tanks... I thought it would be closer to 50/50...

As for what i meant by decorated... I did originally add in the poll natural blah blah blah, but though to each his own, so just left it as decorated... so it would be more balanced...

I hate sunken ships, neon gravel, neon fake plants, stupid bubbler ornaments, and other non-natural things in a tank. I love sand bottoms with driftwood (preferably planted but with most fish I like to keep planting just isn't an option) and rock structures.
