these setups confuse the SH*! out of me...what is the tube that goes straight up in the back for. how do you prime these beast. and dose the intake sit at water level or below it.i think i just need to make one so i can see it work my self.

Should work alright once you add the prime check valve on the top U.

I drilled a hole and inserted the end of the check valve in and glued it in place on my first one. But it leaked after a few months. So I switched to a 1/8"npt threaded to 1/8" barb brass fitting.

I recently built my first bottom siphoning over flow. And I like it alot more than the surface skimming style. I plan to replace or modify the other 4 to bottom siphon style.

How did you insure it was fully primed with no cavatation in the top U ?

What turn over rate are you running? It looks very low from the out put pic.

i backed the ball valve off completely to fill it, then slowly brought it back out until the flow to the sump looked the same as the flow coming from the pump. (it took a couple of tries). no way to guarantee it was full w/o the check valve, but it looked pretty close.
i installed the check valve today, and its running fine (i assume). but i need to look for another type of one way valve to work into the system. i can definitely see how these would go bad easily.

the flow is EXTREMELY low. but im just using it as a trickle system on top of the 2 ac110's currently running on the tank. i dont even know what the flow of the pump is, but its a tiny fountain pump, so id guess between 60 and 90GPH.
i have a couple of AC70 powerheads lying around, that will bump it up to around 400gph.

I would definitely worry about losing the siphon on the overflow. This could lead to a big water problem. Go with Hybrids comments on adding a check valve at the top to allow you to pull out the air that will get trapped in the "U".
