I once had one of those. I called it the mystery cichlid! I think that it was either a stressy cuz he is small demasoni or possibly a melinistic yellow lab?
My little guy was cool but he either dissapeared or looks totally different now!
I have had some very dark yellows lately and I think that the little guy might have grown up.
 
Holy shnikes! I found 2 more when I did a water change the other day, I cant believe I've never noticed these guys before

It looks awsome. How are they holding up now? Are they getting along with the other Africans?
 
Well, the tank they were in they would have gotten eaten for sure so I moved them into a tank with my Butti, which doesn't mess with little fish for some reason. I have some little GTs in with him that are about 1/2 inch and the Butti doesnt touch them. So they are doing good in there
 
My guess is a demasoni mutt with another african, not the convict. I had a female pull the same trick with a Ps. Ruarwe when the male demasoni died. Hybrid babies looked like demasoni (except white bands less bright) but 2-3x the size of the other demasoni!!

They made good pets, but I kept them out of my demasoni breeding population when they got their own tank.

Either way, they look great, and now you've got more. Enjoy them!!
