I just purchased this gar yesterday and added to my 120Gallon. The tank already contains 1 albino clown knife (6"), 1 black ghost knife (7"), 1 fahaka puffur (4").... I also added a p. senegalus (6") but it ended up crawling into my overflow, went right down the tube and met its end in the ball valve... 1 hour after he went into the tank... painful lesson learned regarding securing that over flow... Anyway, the questions I have are regarding general care and feeding... He seems to prefer live food, but I would like to wean him off of it to frozen foods or dry foods. Any recommendations... Also, if I can't wean him, what is the "safest" live food to go w/... I live in fear of infection since the knifefish are in the tank too...

thanx !

First off realize its not a true gar as for live foods without a period of quarantine all live foods are risky-Anne

I just did some searches on the common name and realized that it is a Boulengerella lateristriga, aka striped pike characin... can't seem to get too much info bout them... are they similar to gars in behavior?

If you want healthy feeders, raise your own. Breed guppies or convicts or something and just feed the fry. If you raise them yourself you know their healthy.

wish i had the space to breed enuff feeders to keep these guys fed! best I can do is keep a medicated 60 gallon isolation barrel for the newcomers to stay in for a few days and them transfer them into a feeder tank.

You could try feeding black worms....otherwise just make sure you quarantine your feeders beforehand.
