So, a few of us know that petco's having a sale, buy a filter get a fishtank half off. So you just buy the tank and return the filter.

So i decided to go check out what they got. Looked around the store a lil, then all of a sudden i hear my girlfriend scream out for me.

Walked over, expecting it was a cool oscar or somthing ect, but...its a friggen 12inch Gar.

At first, i thought it was a false marbled gar from the black line on its body.

Walked up to one of the workers, asked them how much.

They said "We got him in but never orderd any, so i guess hes free"

And i of course, had to take it cause i always wanted a gar!

Anyways, i need a ID on this guy.

Il try to get pics later, but right now words will have to do.

Hes a light green, with a black line going from his eye all the way back to his tail. And on that black line, theres a couple of rainbow reflective scales.

Anyone have any ideas? Plus, what to feed him? Hes not eating as of now, but im hoping he will after he gets used to his new tanks.

Thanks

Is he long and thin, and yellowish green? Very long, narrow, thin snout?
Sounds, from your description, like a common needlenose gar. This is in fact a staple at the "chain stores" Awesome fish in its own right - prefers small food. (Fish only)

Hes not as fat and round as a gator, but he is long and narrow, also thin snout.

But i thought he just wasnt fed right from the petco workers.

Do a google for needlenose gar for a pic Is this what you got?

i may have to buy a needlenose just to take pics and add it to this particular photo-key, but in the mean time, compare to the characteristics noted here, and also look at the pics. the only true gars are members of the family Lepisosteidae. although there are variations in pattern and color and snout length, the general body shape of these fish is consistent throughout all 7 species...at the very least, looking at the pics should tell you whether or not you have a true gar or not--

Yeah, i checked it out and thought it was only a key for true gars.

But yeah, i did google it and turns out it is a nieedle nose.

please post pics when you get a chance. ive never seen a needle that was nearly that big. i have one but he is like 6". pics would be appreciated. thanks

Il try to get one tonight.

But i need help now. Its been 3 days in my tank since ive seen him eat. How do you feed these guys?!
I throw feeders in there, it swims by him he wont touch it.
