I was cruising around today running some errands since I have the weekend off. I stopped by the LFS (Jack's Aquarium - Smithville RD) that is closest to my home to pick up some Greenies dog treats for my Australian Shepherd. I usually stop in there about twice a week to check to see if they got any new cichlids in. I wasn't let down, they just got in some marbled convicts today for only 2.99.
I asked the nice girl working there to get me 4 that had a lot of black in them. They were only 2.99 a fish, between 1 1/2 to 2 inches I would say. I've seen them breed this small before. I've never seen marbled convicts (at least marbled to this extent) at a LFS before, and I've been keeping cichlids since 1977.
I don't have a permanent home set up for them yet, I was kind of taken by suprise. They looked really good so I bought the 4 because I think they will sell quickly. I put them in a 20 long with some baby convicts that have grown large enough not to be eaten. There is also a stray toung Neet in there that is somewhere in size between the marbled convicts and the baby convicts.
The baby convicts are from a nice looking sriped male I cought from One LFS chain, and a pink female from a different LFS chain) that had some black spots on her, but not marbled nearly to the extent of the marbled ones I got today. Sadly the striped male father was killed unexpectantly last week, so I'm trying to grow up these babies to see if I get any unique ones or any with marble patterns. If I do, maybe some day I can breed it to on of the marbled ones I bought today.
I certainly need to buy shop for some more growout tanks between all these convicts, my cutteris breeding, my Caquetaia Spectabilis pair that seems close to breeding, my Neets breeding when they get a little older, same with my Hemichromis frempongis. Jeez, that's a lot of grow out room I'm going to need!
I took some crapulent pics of the new marbled convicts, I'll try to take some better ones later. I'm kind of in a hurry, I want to go watch the Steelers kick some butt.
On this one you can see the juvi Neet and a baby striped convict to see the size in relation to the marbled convicts. Oh yeah, thanks to the flash setting you also get to see some unsightly algae, ouch.
