I'm telling you payara are NOT an easy fish to aquire in good health.

You have to expect the worse. 5 hr roadtrip? What percautions were taken? Own tote? 12V pump? Or just tat in bag and drive?

by the sounds of it, I would go with the last one...

Too bad for the tat as well as you the time now may be to focus on the ones that you have and raise and provide for them the best you can instead of trying to buy every one that is available.

Dude, honestly, you probably killed your fish. Bag buddies are fine for payara. They're (especially tats) not as sensative as everyone keeps saying. They're nothing compared to scombs. Anyways, the point is that you don't grab a fish and swish him around in the tank to try to get oxygen to run through their gills. You can hold them infront of a filter outlet if you absolutely have to, but I'd still recommend against it. Payara have very fine scales that come off very easily. You could have given it a secondary infection from handling it. I bet if you were more patient and just let the fish adjust with as little external stress factors as possible (lights off, no other fish in the tank, etc.) it would have made it. You probably just drove it's stress level through the roof.
