Just got my first GEO! W00T! Now I need an I.D.!!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
grrr ya'll are makin me wanna get one!! may have to stop at petsmart soon! are they a limited time specie or just the managers choice specie?

Geophagus abalios, possibly altifrons. Too hard to tell from your photographs, so I'm going purely from the third photo showing striped areas in the caudal patterning (although lateral spot and shape looks altifrons'ish) - give it a few months.

Can't believe people around here still ID Geophagus as "surinamensis", especially when they're 2" - every single thread about them ends up in a discussion about how they are basically non existent in the hobby, at least not from a mainstream perspective, and how in the US they're commonly mislabelled altifrons/abalios variants.

Sometimes the fish's color will change and he will be light tan with a very light gray spot in his side... other times its got the gray blotch visible in the pics below.
i just got some much better photos but i dunno if theyll help, seeing as the fish is still very small. here they are:

Hey, it's been three months, can you post some pics of him being bigger now? As I'm curious to find out what type of geo it is, and maybe someone can ID him. :)
