Just how aggressive is Red Empress?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have a male and female red empress. Mine are pretty peaceful except when they want to spawn and then the male chases but wont harm the others, he is obsessed with his female for a day or two then reverts back to normal till next time. I do have them in a over sized extra large tank though, a smaller tank like a 55 or 75 might have more issues than i have in a 7 foot 265 gallon tank.

The ones I have had have been fairly passive in my tank to the point of being dominated.
The one I would be concerned about is the Moori. Had one of those terrorize my tanks at about 3.5". He killed my prized red shoulder peacock. Well at least I got $25 credit for him. Hope he is getting his butt kicked in his new home!

Mine are great, no aggression

That's my other question. I'll be adding all fish at once (making a trip to a local fish farm where I can get them at good price) If I add large (4" adults) will there be more aggression between all fish ? Would I be better off going with med size (2.5-3") to minimize aggression? All fish would be males. Tx.
it might help because you are going to put them in at same time but,no way there will be any guaranties, eventually they are going become territorial and that is when your going to find out whose-----whose...good luck...

I think that it will be more likely that you run across a killer Yellow Lab(pretty rare) than an aggressive Red Empress. However in a 120g with other Yellow Labs even an evil male will most likely leave the rest of the tank alone. Good luck and post pics.:)

Okay, here I come. I have had two. When they got larger, they were getting pucked by my peacocks. So sold one because they began to chase each other and nip. The larger one I kept. He was dull, but I hoped things would get better. They did he out grew the entire tank and got to 10 inches. His color was amazing, but he began to attack everything in the tank. He chased fish until they jumped the tank or (which fixed) they gave in to him and he torn their fins and scales. He is now at a breeders macking on some girls. He is huge and terrific looking. He could not be in a community tank. So as much as I love them, and others have not had problems, mine were killers. lol

mine are 8 inchers and they get alnog with my fish in the 220 .i have tangs and mubunas with no problems now for over 10 years so i guess its the luck of the draw!!

Thanks everyone for your feedback! I really love how the Empress looks. . . .this is my first tank and was trying to plan as carefully as I could to have a successful stocklist. I realize there are many variables though and any of these fish could be luck-of-the draw. I'll just have to try it and see!

Appreciate your help!
