Just how nasty are these fish?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
My female is soft...the silver dollar pushes her around lol...she is 6"

my RT's are bad ass..... when i first got them , i had em both in a lil 29g tank. divided of course because the male was too aggressive. i put holes in the divider big enough for just HER to get through from side to side.... she would show off ALL the time for him, but he didnt want ANYTHING to do with her. just to kick her ass... i then put them in a 240g w/ 4 other fish.... NOW, they wont leave eachother alone. both of em are very territorial. and even BETTER parents. all the fry are free swimming now and the RT's have about 120g of the tank to themselves. No other fish is allowed on the other side w/ out being tagteamed... you'll LOVE em!

You have just the two of them in the tank and have to seperate them from each other? Is that because the male hasn't reach sexual maturity?

He's mature enough that's for sure. Just highly aggressive towards her, she's really only about half of his body mass. They are a slow growing species approximately half inch per month.

yeah i found they arn't as fast growing as oscars more like dempsey growth speed

OSCAR. depends on what you feed them. i feed mine a lot of protein. they just took a liking to frozen peas, but ONLY if the others in the tank eat them first. It's also all about water changes. The more you do, the faster your fish will grow. i change about 50% of the water in my 240 every sunday. the smaller tanks i do atleast 2-3 times a week.

Spoke to my LFS guy today and he told me they should get a shipment in 2 weeks. I really want a breeding pair but realize at the size that they will be getting in I won't be able to tell whats what.

The male was about 3" here. And the female was about 2", note the slight blueish tinge to the front half of her the dorsal. HTH.

So the females have a blueish ting on the dorsal fin. The book I've been reading says that the females loose the blueish color and it turns black where as the males retain it, is that true? I can't wait. Till they come in. Any sugestions on picking them. I have a 120 gal. Plenty of filtration:2 bio wheel 350s, 1 magnum 350, and a fx3. Sand substrate with drift wood and a couple of artificial hollow logs. Rams horn snails, Mystery snails and MTS for a clean up crew.

The females will loose the majority of their blue speckling but the patch on the dorsal alternates between blue and black according to her mood. Such as Breeding, stress etc.
