Ive got a 150 gallons that just lost its only inhabitant due to DuckLips. How would you disinfect the tank? My plan is to toss all filter media & run the tank for a few days with a healthy dose of bleach in it. My #1question (and I hope the answer is no) is do you think I should remove the sand as well? All opinions appreciated. My first bout with DuckLips.

When it has hit my tank (even with a few fish in it) after vacuuming thoroughly out detritus, I have poured a quart or 2 of drug/grocery store hydrogen peroxide in the tank with everything running to oxidize any remaining bacteria in the tank, and filter system.
I read that this was effective method that has been used successfully in aquaculture.

What is duck lips? When I first heard of it I just assumed that it was lockjaw? How does it happen?

It's stupid contagious and deadly. Don't touch any other tank, or transfer any equipment that contacts the infected tank without sterilization first.

Although it is a ubiquitous bacteria, buildup of organic material provide substrate that can harbor the bacteria , and high nitrates seem to aid the bacteria in adherence to gill and other tissue.
Although it is infective at low temps, temps at or above 82'F seem to make the disease more virulent, and induce acute, very deadly attacks.
The first time it hit one of my tanks, was a few years back during a summer heat wave where my beani were quickly killed.
At first I thought it was a simple locking of the jaw from sparring, which can sometimes be snapped back into place with the fingers.
In this case, the jaw was unable to be moved, probably caused by necrosis of the infected tissue.
