12 small ones in a 55 gallon might be okay for now but you will have to either get rid of some or get a lot larger tank. What a lot of people don't know is that pirahnas are actually very skittish even in a school. They grow fairly large. Imagine 12 grown pirahna in a 55 crashing into everything whenever someone walks by. They do get bolder while feeding but they are not as bloodthirsty as some think. When I had some in my 240, everytime the light went on or someone walked by, they would dive under my driftwood trying to hide. Enjoy them while they're small and hioe everything goes well. Agree.. trim it down to 3 - 4 eventually IMO, honestly 99.9% of reds won't get over 11".

most max out about 10". 12" RBPs are extremely rare, even in the huge school they have at the Chattanooga aquarium. most were 8-10".

yep.. unless it's really old and got awesome genetics + freak of nature luck.. it ain't happening..
