So I have a female JD and she's so dark because the gravel is dark. That's good to know, but how do you tell male from female?

And Burz, loving the EBJD. I would have gotten one but the only place I've seen them sold around me doesn't take care of their fish. Their tanks are always filled with sick and ich-ridden fish, plus they were less than half an inch long.

Actually that EBJD was under a inch when I purchased it on Spring Break, the EBJD grew tremendously honestly.

Nah most females are that dark some of the time. She is usually going to be that black when stressed, in an aggressive stance, or searching for food.

I meant gravel doesn't have everything to do with coloration, but it does play a role if that was unclear.

Thought I might share the growth of my JD. This is two months after the first pictures I posted. She has never faded from the black you see now, but has colored up wonderfully. :grinno:

Sorry everyone but that is not a female, it's a male. It's been clear since the first picture you posted.

I was just given a little one that an oscar ripped off her entire tale will try to take a pic for ya tomorrow and post up. I have not really kept jd and just took this one in as a favor.

Yes, please post pictures of her. I hope she's healing up well. It was very nice of you to take her in. I really do love mine, the tank wouldn't be the same without it (seems to be a debate over amle and female still)
