1. I use frozen saltwater shrimp i guess they are. I once had left over bait from when i went fishing and just used that for their food that night.
2.Raw with shell on if possible because the shell has nutrients but make sure you take tail off.
3. Let them thaw out for a little in tank water. Make sure they are thawed out completely though because the shell could get stuck if it isnt soft.

It's a nice treat and varies there diet.
 
Make sure its raw.

I feed all my fish saltwater prawns.
 
I tend to feed my dats the saltwater shrimp thats frozen and sold in #'s. Feeding the shell and tail is important because the majority of the vitamins is in the shell. The only part of the shrimp that you need to worry about is the tail. At the end of the tail is a spiked flap covering the end of the meat then the tailfins. That spike is the only thing you need to remove. It comes off really easy and the tail fins and the shell is good ruffage for your dats. Please be sure that if you are feeding smaller dats to cut it into smaller pieces so they can swallow it easier. Dats can rip it into smaller shreds but it dirtys your water and the uneaten shrimp rots pretty fast adding to your ammonia levels.

Thats why i keep a few small catfish with my Dats to pick up the waste.
