I traded two Blackbelts for it from a local guy, it's the only he has.

Amazing fish none the less. Nice pick up, I wish you luck.

Aquamojo;676405; said:You are correct. I have four Umbee now and lost two previous to the disease. This is one species that requires a ton of maintenance as well as an extrememely large tank and well balanced diet.
That is just total bulls**t. I took the photo above of my friend Cichlid Scene's Umbee. He got it from another friend who had it and a few others in his 600 gallon tank. That gentleman got it from an aquraist (DePierro..one of the original pioneers in the cichlid hobby) who brought the parents into the U.S. many years ago. The fish in the photo is F2 fry of the original wild fish. It was never in a 200 gallon tank...it was 265 gallons. To give you an idea on maintenance, Chris used to do a 75% water change twice a week. The fish is now in...I believe a 600 gallon tank with another friend of ours. I think the overall size and beauty of this particular species goes directly back to it's lineage.
Part of the problem with the health of this particular species is that there are no wild Umbee being imported. Most of the fish in the hobby are fry of fry of...In the wild the Umbee is an open water predator. I don't know how many there are the same size as the one posted. It is far and away the largest cichlid I have ever seen in a home aquarium. Despite it's size I would classify the Umbee as ultimately one of the most sensitive and difficult to keep SA cichlids in the hobby today.
