Perhaps you'd like to try this. It worked for me when I started a 100g planted tank once and believed the 'Pre-washed!' claim on the gravel bag.

I tested all my water levels...
Nitrate and nitrite at 0, ph 7.5...

Looks better than gravel and ive heard the dump does not go under the sand which is definately a BIG +... I hated cleaning out gravel... every day i would find more dump under it and i would have to empty my whole tank just to clean all of it out.

one thing you will have todo is churn up the sand every now and then... what I do is stick my arm in and run my fingers through the sand. There will be a bunch of trapped gas. I do this a cpl times a year and takes a min todo
