so me and my buddy where out fishing the other day and caught to fish that i was considering putting in my 125g sunny/blue gill tank. first was a slob of a crappie weighing in at 1.32 lbs on my scale and 13 inches. was by far the biggest one i have seen in person. second was a american eel about 14 inches. Realy never hear of anyone keeping them but did some reserch and they are very long lived and read one lived 88 years which is nuts.

? is do eels make good pets and would a crapie of that size if i ever catch one again be to big for my tank

I know people have kept American eels with success. They are notorious escape artists, so be sure you tank is well sealed. I would guess the eel would hide most of the time.

I think the 125 is big enough for the crappie, but it would be better to have a big enough tank to keep a group, since they are social fish.

Noto u said they are schooling fish u think it would school with my sunnies and blue gills or only other crappie it cant fit in its mouth?

I have seen a few people who keep eels. Only keep them with big fish as they will eat anything small. Also, as said, they will escape though even the smallest of holes, so make sure you are sealed up real good.

I have been tempted to keep one, but think my 75 is too small.

Don't they need salt? You can buy live american eel at baitshop for fishing for Stripped Bass. They are dirt cheap $2 or less. I was under the impression that they were full salt or at least heavy brackish! I suppose that it could be a different species that they sell for bait at tackle shops.

Eels are catadromous- they spawn at sea, the larvae (leptocephali) and juveniles (elvers) are marine. Adult males hang out in coastal and estuarine areas. Adult females go up rivers, way into the continental interior hundreds or thousands of river miles from the sea, then head back to sea to spawn and die.

Jason- I don't think sunnies will school with crappie. I think you will need a group of crappie to keep them happy. I don't know if the two species will school together.

i had a crappie for about two months did nothing but hide in the corner. regardless i did everything i could to get him to eat. he once at a minnow but that was about it. you would think as much as they like to eat your bait they would be fun fish to keep but i have read a few threads that had the same issues as i did. who knows maybe one you catch may be different. best of luck.

For the eel just make sure that your tank has a secure lid as I have heard they can be escape artists
