Sorry, I don't consider it a rescue, just another reason for them to stock more to go to unprepared buyers because they're oh so cute or get stuck with something that will kill it.
I had to change jobs recently and unfortunately, petco was the only place I knew I could get hired immediately outside of fast food. It's a tough choice.
You wanna know how much they care about the fish? Less than they care that the tanks are pretty looking (no algea, no water streaks, etc). They literally do sweeps for dead fish on the hour every hour. When people come in with dead fish the managers often just tell me to say the water is fine because X fish "alway's die" and they can get their exchange.
You know how many dead IDs got returned on my 4 days last week? Eight. Plus 3 more died. Then 15 more were shipped in, albinos this time, and managers get annoyed when you warn people how big they get and discourage buyers.
I don't mean to be harsh but seriously, you aren't "rescuing" an animal from a massive corperate chain if you paid for it. You are just buying a product as a customer that will be replenished just as they have been doing for years. That goes for ANY animal, be it a fish, mouse, cat, dog, bird or cricket!
Next time complain to a manager, demand an apology from the employee that was rude to you and write the company about how you refuse to shop at a place that encourages such neglect and mismanagement of ANY animal, including fish.
If you demand a contact /address number for their regional animal coordinator they are supposed to give it to you, complain to them.
