Just rescued my first "Monster"s

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The O appears to have some scrapes on his side likely from rough decoration. If it was already there when you got him just make sure you don't have any pointy/rough edged decoration, like lava rock for instance, in your new tank. O are super clumsy and will rub right on it or bump into it.

That being said, good water quality and it should heal easily within 1-3 days.

The 60g should be good for just the O by himself. As far as sexing them the JD shouldn't be any problem sexing. Oscar however cannot be sexed visually as male and female have no differentiations between their outer appearance and the only way to really verify O sex is if they lay eggs.

I have 5 fish total, the 10" oscar, 7" JD, 5" Red-Ear, 4" Bluegill and 4"Green Sunfish. I have no intentions of adding more into the mix, I mainly rescued because I wanted the JD, I am not a huge Oscar fan so if I hear of someone who can give it a good home I would be quite willing to part with it. For now I will baby it best I can. I know I am overstocked but I put my second Marineland 350 in there so I have decent (though not monsterous) filtration to help. Once I get the 70 cleaned and setup, I might move the Oscar over there while I am building the background. Waiting for word on another CL 60g deal that would be perfect for it.

Yeah they had a big chunk of something rough in the 29g with him, couldnt really tell what it was through the green water, I think they may have caused the scrapes when they where getting it out of the tank because ol'oscar did not want to come quietly.

Oscar looks good! apart from the small cuts! i guess the 60 is better than what they were in but a future upgrade would be better ;)

^^^ I like the jd, he's nice looking. If I'm right, you can't sex oscars by appearence.

Sounds like a good plan. I'm not familiar with sunfish or bluegil but the O needs a min of 55g and JD minimum 40g. If you picked up another decent sized CL deal you could definitely comfortably stock all these fish between the two. (unless the sunfish or bluegil requires lots too, like I said I really don't know anything about those guys)

Correct.

The small guy in pic #1 is slightly optical illusioned, he is maybe 25% bigger than he appears in that picture, its a green sunfish, while the smallest in the tank, he is a little over 4", quick and has some attitude of his own. If he does get snackerized, at least the monster will be full for a while!

very nice fish you ended up getting

You can vent them to verify gender.

size reference for some good sized bluegill/sunfish - can get quite a bit larger still and these guys are all 10-11"+

natives are a lot of fun to keep, im really getting that itch again i just don't have the tank space..

I know they can get quite a bit bigger :P I am heading down to a place near my moms later this summer that has been stocked for years and there are many 10in+ bluegill in there, beautiful ones too.

Btw, wtf is up with this Oscar, he isnt showing agression to other fish but he is tearing the hell out of my tank, moved or tore out every decor item in there so far, right now he is "fighting" with a 4" x 12" pvc pipe... no fish inside, just some rocks atm... he's bein' a real punk! Literally swims to the plants, bites ahold and wrestles them out, and I had them buried deep in river pebble! lol :screwy: This fish needs to :chillpill: The JD is doing much better, a lot more active today, I would like to get a mate for him, he is very pretty. Is he a regular JD or would he be considered a blue jd? he is a lot more blue than the pictures gives justice too. Almost everything that "reflected" yellow in the picture is blue. Just curious, if you guys say he is regular, I will believe you :D first JD I have owned.
