Just set up a tank in my office. Craigslist is sweet....came with everything...filter, heater, etc and a couple fish...Giant Danio, Leopard Pleco. We also added a couple....Jack Dempsey, Dragon Goby. Pics...

I'd imagine the giant danio would be happier in a school, but your current stock is already going to outgrow the 20g.

cool but....that gravel... :/

It came with the tank. I don't like it either but it'd be a pita to switch it out for natural gravel.

I do have some dry natural gravel at home...any suggestions on how to switch it out without having to re-cycle the tank?

I know danios like to school, probably going to get a couple more.

It looks like you've put in a lot of good work on this tank, but honestly I'm not sure if any of those fish are a good fit for a 20g tall....I would suggest rehoming your current fish and maybe replacing with a nice mix of platies / tetras / barbs / cories / etc.

Regarding gravel replacement -- over the course of a week siphon out the gravel 1/3 at a time and replace with your new gravel -- that should give your bacteria time to grow on the new gravel and prevent a mini-cycle.

Good luck!

I also agree with new gravel. I would scoop it out into a bucket, one scoop at a time. You might have to remove the decorations. Then spread the new gravel into the tank underwater, after rinsing it out.

That jack dempsey and goby will outgrow the tank before you know it.

I know the fish will outgrow the 20 :D, its really just a growout tank. I have several tanks at home, one being a 180 gallon. I intend to set up a brackish tank for the goby with some puffers too. My buddy at work got the Jack Dempsey and will re-home him in a large tank also. The danio and the pleco came with the tank and I don't have any plans for them yet but I for sure won't keep them in the 20 too long. We are also getting another filter for this tank.

Its nice having a tank at work so if you want to have a fish over-nighted you don't have to stay home to wait for delivery on a week day.

Good idea on changing the gravel out a third at a time. I might even switch the gravel out for sand as it seems like maybe the goby would like it better.

Update...we started switching out the gravel today as you can see in the pic. The plan is to wait a couple days and then do another third, and then wait a few more days and finish it off. We also got a second hob filter for this tank....it is now sporting 2 whisper 20's, an older version and a brand new version, the Whisper 20 EX.

When I started pulling out the old gravel I think I might have scared and stressed the danio. For a few minutes he was frantically swimming in loops, even flipping upside down at times and running into the walls of the tank. He is doing better now but still swimming a little funny.

Everyone else seems to be doing great though...the jack dempsey no longer hides when someone approaches the tank and the dragon goby ate some algae wafer today.

We've noticed the pleco has been bullying some of the other fish a bit, hope this behavior doesn't continue.
