Just snagged a freshwater blue prawn-few questions

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Pretty cool, I would get one.

Well... turns out he is a blue prawn. He shed two days ago and his claws have begun to turn a pastel blue color.

I can't begin to explain how incredibly neat of a pet this thing is. Seems to have a personality. Every time it sheds, it changes size/shape/color. The latest moult was quite dramatic. It's claws are easily twice its length now. It almost looks cumbersome to have claws that big. haha :)

I'll throw a pic or two in shortly.

awesome stuff. Where can U snag em?

This was obtained from a tropical fish wholesaler. The shipper who sent the batch to them was from Ecuador. I believe any pet store should be able to order them as long as they can confirm it is a M. Rosenbergii. As was stated earlier in the thread, there aren't always guarantees that you will be getting a blue prawn. It could be a host of others that are just labeled as one as they are the most common of the bunch.

Got another prawn. It's supposed to be a long-armed one. Very small compared to the blue prawn... Figured it would be best to give it a separate tank. This is a very beautiful shrimp. Dark brown with a tan stripe down its back. The tail has a defined blue area at the end and the claws are almost black.

Meanwhile, the blue prawn seems to be going through his troubled teenage phase. He only comes out at night and refuses to eat most of what I'm giving him. He also turns every plant I have in there around and seems to re-arrange the aquarium every night. Bugger...

Oh yes, separate tank indeed. They can be agrressive, especially the older they are.
And if one would sense a moult in the other, it might move in and dismember the soft, defenseless post-moult prawn.
Worst part is they can't even eat close to as much as the fresh kill would be, so you are also charged with removing the carcass of the loser before it rots.

Damn inverts....

Good call sir. :) That's what I was thinking, especially during the moulting process. Since things are going well in the original tank, there was really no need to disrupt things by putting the other prawn in there. I had a 10 gallon sitting in storage that seemed perfect for the new guy. I think it is a M. Dux which only gets about 3 inches anyway. He seems happy under his clay pot cave I made for him. haha

Dude, they are so aggressive when they settle in and are highly owner responsive. And since their claws are pretty much a joke, hand feeding is another enjoyed activity!
