Allso, my J.D. changes colors a lot, from dark brown w/ black stripes, to very light brown and hardly any stripes. And how do I tell male and female, its not like looking at puppys. lol.
 
edit" JD females have more pronounced larger spangles on their gill plates. almost making up stripes and large blotches. Males will have spots and normally they wont drop below to the gill plates.

JD males will normally have more pointed dorsal and anal fins.

the females generally have less coloration along the sides of the body than males do.

and last but not least.. Males grow noticeably larger.
