They willl venutally shorten up once they are been kept in our natural enviroment.

My comm tank is fairly dark. When i got mines from Sing, the red had fairly long barbels. I think they are shortening up as they grow.
 
Interesting, if you cut out sight for an aro, he grows longer barbels, which I would suppose they use as a sensory organ. If you interfere with one of their senses they compensate with another sense............cool stuff.
