listen man with your nitrite that high your oscar is in trouble. do you have another tank to put him in? if not change at least 50% of the water now and when the water temperature stabilises change 50% again to get that nitrite down. ideally you could do with returning the oscarto the store or putting it in a friends tank til yours is cycled

Ok i did about a 55% water change and the nitrite level is 2 now.

its still very high wait til the water temp gets to 24-25 and change another 55% and again and again to get it dow to 0...best advice i can honestly give is return the oscar to the shop as soon as you can that level of nitrite is going to be burning his gill rakers and poisoning him. Take him back to the shop and read up about the fishless cycle and then start buying fish once your tank has cycled otherwise you are going tobe changing 50% water at least once a day for maybe a month or more and still may end up damagingyour oscar

Oscars are weird by nature, they are very moody too. I added another Oscar to keep mine company and they are like two peas in a pod.

What test kit do you have? Does it have instructions or were you just told how many drops to add? I agree with others that the standard LFS definition of cycling is garbage. You are basically looking at testing for ammonia and nitrite every day and likely doing water changes very often, like potentially everyday. Ammonia and nitrite with an "I" should really be 0. Do you know of anyone with a mature aquarium? If so get some filter material, sponge or ceramic noodles or something. This can introduce and jump start the ammonia-metabolizing and nitrite-metabolizing bacteria colony that you need. When you have your bacterial colonies up and functioning (mostly in the filter), processing the ammonia and the nitrite so that you get double zeros every day for seven days without a water change, then your tank is cycled.

Hope this makes sense.

P.S. Do not replace any of the media in your filter. Only rince in old tank water. Only replace when it is falling apart and take out the carbon. This is only effective for several days and is really only used to remove medications.
