Algae is a normal part of a turtle tank, because of the strong UVA/UVB light the turtle needs to bask and dry out their shells, killing the bacteria that can cause shell rot, just one of the ways they can develop shell rot... anyways, its perfectly normal to have excess alge in a turtle tank. U could have a fx5 in a 40gal, and where the light shines, it'll grow @ mshill. Acrylic is easily damaged. For god's sake u use the wrong end of a sponge and it's ruined(who knows y the pleco did that in the first place, poor thing was probably starving, or you made it up). And I'll keep in mind that turtle shell and acrylic is the same material. If any of you knew ANYTHING about turtles, you'd know how absolutely insane all this sounds. "But I had a turtle a few yrs ago" good for u. I've had very healthy turtles for half my life(about 10yrs, I'm 23). They regurlarly go to the vet and get a perfect bill of health everytime. My water is clear, and clean, a turtle owner would know how hard that is to accomplish w/ 2 adult sliders and a juv map). If I didn't have my oscar, I wouldn't need another filter. Fish require special water conditions, and turtles don't. My plecos have always been healthy never had any diseases or ANY issues, & my turtles have always been healthy. Jesus Christ people! I just took a perfectly fine picture, posted it to put a few smiles, and mostly all I got was **** from very rude know-it-alls who assume a turtle tank is a fish tank, and a turtle shell is plastic. If any of you actually HAD turtles and plecos, you'd know that they clean their shells nightly, and it is ABSOLUTELY ludicris(sp), to assume that a pleco will sit there and munch THROUGH a healthy turtle's shell a disesed shell might be different, idk). They skim over them nightly, then move on to whatever else there is to eat. Apparently it's bad to try to put a few smiles on peoples faces. Well pardon me for trying to better a fish/turtle owners day:irked: *******s... sry for the language

I really think you took that the wrong way, completely.. I see that you are still kinda new to the site.. and many new comers can take MFK'ers the wrong way... mshill(I know I didn't spell her username right) and aclockworkorgange are active users and fishkeepers and as far as I know have a good rep for being responsible and knowledgeable at what they do.. All I'm saying is just chill a bit, and you too might learning something new about your turtles... we are all here to help each other.. and really no one was bashing you at all... This I promise (my post), was not meant to upset you in any way.. :)

Advice and criticizim are 2 very different things. I always appreciate advice. But when I know for a fact it is a good thing, and everyone is telling me stuff like, u don't take good care of ur turtles, or ur husbandry h abits suck. That is not advice. I got lots of advice on my post about my injured oscar, because of the advice I got, i now know how to take proper care of my little girl, and she is also healing quickly thanks to all the advice I got from the nice people here. This post is the first negitive experince on this site. I love this website :) If I find out I'm doing something wrong, I'll be the first to admit it and remedy the issue. But sitting there typing stupid things isn't advice. its just plain rude, and for personal reasons, I hate rude people. I didn't intend my post to sound like I was freaking out(which reading it over, it kinda does sound that way). Basically my intention was to show people I know what I'm talking about, I'm not incompetent, and that sitting there critisizing me so much for putting up a cute picture is unwarrented. My wording could've been better, but that was my intention in that post. My whole idea was just to post a simple cute picture, and instead all I got was critisizm.

People on my baby oscar post suggested I need better filtration, and explained why. Since it was obvious that they know more about oscars than me, I went out and got another fx5 just for her benifit. I didn't know, but it made sense. Turtles are indeed dirty creatures, but for yrs i'd never had problems before w/ the catfish, plecos, and goldfish, so I assumed she'd be fine too. Thanks to you people I know I was very wrong in assuming that. I am always open to learning new things, especially when it comes to my pets. 2nd filter will be set up wed btw ;)

A turtle expert and a fish expert are 2 different people. Not discrediting anyone here;) but just cause you've had turtles for 20yrs, doesn't mean u'll be an arowana expert too. Or just cause you've had tiger oscars for 20yrs doesn't mean you know how to care for turtles. Different creatures, different care, just same basic habitat :D.

Someone said something earlier about the presence of algae on a turtles shell indicating improper husbandry.I'm not sure how harmful the algae is to a turtle but I've seen plenty of pictures of turtles in the wild with it on their shells. As for he pleco,I'd think that it could cause a health problem to a soft shell or FRT rather than the hard shelled turtles,if at all.

Why thank you.:D
