nice thread too richard...information like this has been long overdue. maybe restart the thread from scratch (so you can organize it how you want it) and have it pinned?

I am going to redo it so it is better organized and detailed out long before posting it.. This was done haphazard and on the fly so was doomed to fail structure wise...

Not to mention when you go to the LFS and see that "spotted Florida alligator gar" you're ready to scrap the common names anyway (and then you look closer and said "gar" has an adipose fin).
LOL

I caught a juvenile gar today. It's about 16mm long. Not sure the species, both alligator gar and spotted gar are plausible at my research site. My prediction is spotted gar. The water is intermediate fresh/brackish, and I found a spotted gar skeleton there a few weeks ago, presumably it (the skeleton) had finished spawning up on the marsh, and then died. I've been out there during the spawn, and it is really wild to see all the gar thrashing around in about 4" of water. At the time, we caught a 2 footer that was literally underfoot, using only a landing net.

Any tips for getting this baby to feed? I can easily obtain live mosquito larvae in a range of sizes, which is the first thing I'm going to try.

talking about the common names when i bought my baby florida/spotted they called them longnose paddletail gar. but im not good with scientific names. guess i should learn that stuff huh??

Very Cool... Just as an ID note if your fish has a white stripe from the snout to the Dorsal fin it is a gator. if this is missing I'd strongly expect Spotted. This stripe is a key trait of the genus Atractosteus under 10 Cm...

May I ask which collage your with down there?

YES

My juvenile has a light stripe just above the dark stripe. You may be able to tell from this photo, in which case I'd be delighted if you'd tell me. Oh, and it was happy to gobble up some aquatic fly pupae that I gave it last night. I'm going to set up a small (3gal) tank for it today, and I should be able to get some clearer photos at that point.

I'm an insect ecology grad student at Tulane, and I work in the brackish marsh just outside New Orleans. The first fish I caught here recreationally was a 4' alligator gar (other photo, I'm in orange), and I've been mildly obsessed with gars ever since.
