I just brought a juvenile red devil from my LFS about 4 days ago and every since I purchased him all he seems to do is hide underneath a piece of driftwood that I have in my 75 gallon tank. I know that it usually takes a couple of days for fish to get used to their new environment but most cichlids that I have purchased in the past have atleast started showing signs of settling in by now. My question is, is this normal behavior for red devil juvies?

Is he by himself? What, if any, are his tankmates?

Yes he has the tank all to himself for the most part. His only tankmake is a 4in pleco. The tank is located in my dining room which is not really a high traffic area but we do walk past the tank every now and then.

^^ Beat me to it!

Also, how big is he/she? Every fish is different some are more skittish than others. It is not uncommon for a newly acquired solitary fish, or a bullied fish to hide and not show any interaction. If he is by himself, just give him some time to develop some "courage" there is no set time.

I've also noticed in the past that when i would place a very small fish(1.5-2") in a 75g or larger that it would take more time for them to settle.

Are there enough decorations in the tank? Maybe you could try adding some more to make him more comfortable.

I say just give him time, eventually he will associate you with food and then will be begging all day and night.

That is just the way they are.
They'll even hide their eyes and stick their whole body out a hiding place that they dont even fit. Some bite you and glass bang right away, some can be like that till they get use to seeing you.

Try some dither fish like Giant Danios......the thought is that of a fish that hides sees a school of fish out swimming around, they get a sense of security & this will break them of this habit.

Just leave it alone. No need to go disturb him with unwanted fish and at the same time hurt the fish that shouldn't be there.

Use a mirror

You can do either. It's just so small right it will get bolder once bigger. Mine came around at 6-7" . You could add some dithers if you want, but these fish are pretty brutal with roommates.
