I have seen some fish at our local Petsmart.
They have them labeled as JD's but it is obvious that they are an Amphilophus type fish. There are individuals up to 3.5 inches.

They do not have vertical stripes on them, just a line of "spots" down the lateral line area. They have red in the fins, and a red blush along the throat. They have more pronounced lips than the other tank of typical midas/RD, which are orange and smaller than these ones.
They do not look to me like any juvi midas/RD I have ever seen.

The question is when does juvi midas/RD typically change into the orange adult colouration? Could these fish be lyonsi?

Thanks,
Burt :)

Thats the whole thing, they were labeled as Jack Dempsey's, they have no idea what they are. I would think it is possible that a mistake was made and they were shipped an oddball bunch of fish by accident.

Have you ever seen Midas/RD at 3.5 inch with this colouration?

Burt:)

No pics. If I have to go back to take pics then I might as well buy one.
