Juvi midas/RD vs. Amphilophus lyonsi

Petsmart doesn't get lysoni. Their fish come from a distributer, not from breeders.

Petsmart has branched out with their suppliers lately. I've seen some fish & herps in my locale petsmarts, that I had to do a double take myself, that I never expected them to have. It may be possible that they got lyonsi but more then likely just dull colored RD/ midas. Buy one grow it up & see.

I did pick one up and after watching him for a while I think that they were barred midas/rd.

Yeah I did the same thing and grabbed 1 (for 2.99, dude agreed it was a "Firemouth" ) I thought it was a festae or uro and I posted a thread with pics called "festae or uro?''.My MFK skills arent advanced enough to pull up the shortcut or whatever it is you do to just click and view it. Turns out to be barred midas. Looks even less like festae every day.

Nice looking fish. But it does not look like a lyonsi to me.
