My wife got me a Jaguar for Valentines day, it had a horizontal tear in it's caudal fin, In the last month it has grown quite a bit, but the fin has not made any progress.... Will it always be ripped or am I just being impatient?

Also, is there anyway to sex them as juvies?

I think your jag is too small to sex still. I would say at about 5 inches you can sex it. I'm not sure if it will heal, it looks like it is split pretty bad. But things can always change. Good luck with this little guy.

fin may or may not heal.Be able to tell sex better once the vertical lines start breaking up.but however looks like to be female but could be wrong.

API Melafix is your friend. It works best on a fresh tear or wound. It has saved a few of my fish from battle wounds. It should heal being so young.

Feed high protein food, fish or any animal for that matter neede protein to regenerate damaged parts..

I have seen worst, my dovii got a torn fin, a bit worst than what you have now, it took about 5 days to regenerate, makes me wonder how do they do it ???

This happened to my jag as well. It ended up healing nicely but took some time. Good luck :D

Well hopefully mine will do the same.

This Jag was purchased with the torn fin, and that was a month ago. Makes me wonder...

Is being fed Hikari Cichlid Gold, Frozen Blood Worms, and Frozen Brine Shrimp, it will also nibble on the Pleco's algae wafers, pretty good diet I'd imagine

I will grab some, I wonder if a month is still considered fresh ;)

When I got him i guess I just assumed it was caused by the other juvie jags at the LFS, figured it would grow back with no special treatment aside from a good diet

Anyone else want to chime in? I guess time will tell either way

my room mates jag was the same way and healed in a few months so hopefully yours does the same. and as said above it is to early to tell but looks like it could be a female

From the picture it looks like a broken or deformed fin ray. I think it will most likly fill in as the fish grows but it's also possable it could remain that way. I don't think it needs any meds, a good diet, clean water changes and time will tell.
