depends on the indivuduals, some fish have less distingusable charateristics than others. And others you can tell at first glance, i have seen 1"ers that i could tell were different from normal mota's, and 6"ers that i barely could, post a pic of yours, the better the shot the easier to tell.
 
I agree with XR:) Here's a pic of mine(RED Tiger).Be careful of tankmates after the 3" mark.These guy's can be nasty!

What are the distinguishable characteristics between the two, besides the red color when adult? What do you look for in an 1"er to tell the difference? I will post some pics this weekend.

Beautiful fish. I don't see any red color in it and know males have less red, but how can you tell that yours is a red tiger, and not gold?

Red and gold is easy to tell apart.

They look like 1". Not too easy to sex from thier. Reds IMO have a deeper red as they mature at the stomach. The gols have a lightish gold of all ages. I could be wrong but this is just based on what I've seen.
