That's basically how I do keep. With the weather it looks like It'll be sring before the jobs come back. (I'm a carpenter)

Oh yeah salt and sand.

Key here...CHEAP!

I use the $5 bag of 40lbs of mortons water softner salt and $3 a 50lb bag of walmart sand. Neary a problem using either! The walmart sand is cool as it is from actual river beds. Mine had all size, shapes and colors of grains as wel as mollusc shells and the like to give it a very natural appearance.

The K.I.S.S. METHOD works great for me too.

This method seems to work well for me too..... I switched my pond over to barebottom....... Just that much easier to clean. Try to do a 20% everyday (waterheater takes a dump after 20%) along with a quick poo vac, and at least a 50% change on the weekends. Swap out re-useable mech media twice a week.

Now if this K.I.S.S. method can be applied to drip systems I'll be set.......LOL

I still have NEVER owned a python..... Never will. Have fittings for the shower. Gravel vac into trashcans and use the same hose I hook to the shower to fill, along with a pump to pump water straight into toilet in winter rightout the front door in summer.

interesting take on things Nic, everytime family or friend's or delivery guy's have seen my rays and said "wow they are fantastic or wierd, are they hard to keep?" im like nope lots of water changes with good filtration and lots of food and leave them to it. simple as that. the only thing i do different is use RO water because my tap water has been crap in the past.

i think most of us already live by this method... the only test i relly use is the nitrate test to see if i have my drip turned up enough...

I never heard of KISS before until now. But it seems that I've been doing KISS without realizing it for ages. I think if you care for your pets then it is just instinct.

few more things to add....

1. when in doubt to a water change ( falls under stop crying as well)
2. if something is not right and rays look stressed do a water change...
3. DO NOT CRY.... FISH DIE EVERYDAY ZZHIT HAPPENS
4. 2 rules to fish keeping 1 fish die... 2 you cant change rule #1
5. its not the end of the world if you kill a ray... try learning from your mistake and dont cry about it...
