So I have two 7" x 17" 150 micron polypropylene socks. I had a gallon of K1 media laying around and I dump half gallon in each sock. Any issues/damage to the socks by putting K1 in them? I no theres better ways to use K1, just lazy n tire.

I do not think that k1 would damage the socks. It is just that the shocks were meant for mechanical filtration and k1 is a bio media. Debris could get caught in the bottom of the socks and you would have no way of knowing because the k1 kaldnes is in there. What are you using them for? Mechanical or biological filtration? Do you have other types of mechanical filtration before the socks?

The thing is I just have these K1 laying around, so its either put them in tank or back in storage. I use the socks strictly for mechanical. As for debris getting caught in the bottom of the socks, I dont mine since i use these socks for mechanical either ways. I have ceramic rings for bio. I just figure I can add some bio/mechanical to my system. The flow from the PVCs are doing a real good job of boiling the K1.

The k1 is not doing any good in the sock. I guess you can keep the k1 in there if you want to, but k1 is not for mechanical filtration and i see no point in using k1 in the socks.

But isnt some bio media growing on the K1 though? If not, next water change I'll put the K1 back in storage

Yeah i guess so, but every time you clean your mechanical filter, that bacteria gets killed, and it takes 6 week or so for that bacteria to establish and start really doing anything. You also do not want bacteria colonizing your mechanical filter. The bacteria is most efficient and effective if it is all in one place and when bacteria grows on the k1, bacteria dies in the ceramic media and created extra ammonia. Also, using k1 as mechanical filtration traps debris and that debris later breaks down and creates ammonia. The purpose of mechanical filtration is to catch debris so you can remove the debris before it breaks down and the k1 traps the debris and is then very hard to clean out, and while you are cleaning it out, all the bacteria gets killed off. The sole purpose of k1 is to trap biofilm. That is what it was designed for.

Completely agree, I want the bacteria to concentrate in my ceramic rings. Ill remove the ceramic rings next water changes. thanks
