I just used Aquatic Eco Systems turn key "low space bio reactors" as a guide line when I built mine..... Those guys are very helpful with questions too, just give them a call if you get stumped.

I believe it's based off food going in (pounds).

You could, but it was designed for a moving bed filter, not static.
