K1 vs. Chopped Straws

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I've tried straws before. For me it's a wild-goose chase to find the right straws. You burn a lot of fuel driving around town looking for them. Don't like the colors of most of them and worry about them leaching that color eventually. Don't like that when you cut a bunch of them at once sometimes the ends stick or crimp together. Also don't like that some straws are more or less buoyant than others depending on the brand you get. So it's pretty much a crap-shoot whether or not they boil correctly, because they may either sink too much or float too much. Going with straws may be wasted time and money.

I'm using the ultima 11 media.
2 cu.ft in ultima filter and 2 cu.ft in bio-reactor.
Cost under $80 for 2 cu.ft.

If they're Polypropylene or Polyethylene they float. If they're Polystyrene they sink. I don't think it's generally on the packaging what material they are made of.
