who uses this?
i am wondering, can i use powerheads to move the media around, or only air bubbles from the air pump?

i would assume that both is fine, either one or the other or both as the same time.
the point of this is the move them very fast, the faster the movement the better it works.
but, can anyone give me feedback on what they think?

the key is supposed to be undisturbed inside of the filter, and outside are the young heavy feeder bacterias.

if i use powerhead, it may push the stuff inside the media out and dislodge them?

feedback would be great.

expensive, but im convinced that its german :D
germans make good stuff! eheim and all lol

i use air pumps to move my k1 media in my sumps.the idea is the extra oxgen will make a more suitable enviroment for the beneficial bacteria to grow.

Ok then, how bout if i use both!
say a high putput pump stirring it on one direction
then a wavemaker pushing it another to give extra turbulence.
the concept is supposed to be the chaotic turbulence that makes it so efficient.

do you think thats ok?

in my opinion.with enough air, theres no need for powerheads.mine are all "chaotic" with just airstones.perhaps i'll do a video of a couple of mine and you'll understand.watch for a pm in the next couple days

thanks that would be cool
yeah, just that i have a spare powerhead:D
so if no harm, and only positive, might as well lol
but yes, a good air pump with a big airsone would suffice.

how do you fine the k1 media, good?
do you supplement it with other media or just that alone?

I'm sold on mine and I haven't even got the bio chips to add to the K1 yet.

I believe in fail safes so I use falling water and air to "boil" mine.

If you use meds that alter specific gravity and you have loads of air going to the stuff it foams enough to lift the media. Potentially right out onto the floor.

If you talk to reps that sell the stuff they'll tell you contact time is vital, so high flow isn't really what this media was designed for, however some of us with rays enjoy the high flow blasting this stuff around, but just like Diggin said, air is enough, and the crazy amounts of air used to boil it is nothing but beneficial.

I tried powerheads and did not enjoy the results. Seems blowing it around doesn't do much but if you can push it straight down with falling water it seems to work. A 2" pipe carrying close to 2K gph making a 6 inch drop into the media gave me what I was looking for. I still use loads of air, but even if I turn the air pump off entirely I still get a nice "boil" just from the falling water. I just run one reactor on slow flow and one on high flow so either way I'm covered........ lol.

I'm thankful Diggin was kind enough to warn me about the foam and meds. Otherwise it would have been chaos. I added meds and kept an eye on it and sure enough within an hour almost all my K1 was floating on a bed of foam drying out.

Most people aren't going to find this out till it is too late.

Thanks Diggin!!!!!!

PS. As a car mechanic, I can honestly say I absolutely hate anything German made. But I make an exception for K1/K3/Bio chips and certain German beers in green containers.......

here are 2 of my sumps with a mixture of k1,k3,bio-chips,bio balls and wlm brand sinking media. sorry they are kind of dark. these 2 sumps are the best lit of all i have. the air pumps driving these 2 sumps are alita al-40's.there is air to spare from each pump to run a few 4" disc airstones in each tank as well..each bio chamber is approximately 24"x30"x16" deep.
