Kayak Fishing

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have a 14' canoe I use. I love getting into those small lakes via small rivers that nobody fishes. I have been moved around by a bass and a bowfin before. I've had it almost 10 years and won't go without one anymore.

Kayaks are awesome for fishing, I use a recreational 12' Pungo that I rigged for fishing in the back bays here on Long Island, as well as in small fresh water lakes/rivers. It's amazing how close you can get to the fish.

I have heard Kayaks are fantastic for just that. I have a canal in my "yard" that leads out to big lakes thus wouldnt even have to trailor it to my car which is just as well as my car is a Cooper lol.

The fear I have of gators has prevented me from buying one. I used to canoe all the time when I lived in Long Island (Wading river).
I am afraid of a gator jumping out of the water a bit grabbing me . It would be an uneasy fishing experience thus havent bought one yet.
Might go with some type row boat (will build up sides a bit higher) as want to minnow trap in mid lake but fear of gators has prevented me from actually buying a boat yet and a yacht is out of my price range lol

i have done it in lakes for bass and pike as well as in oceans for mahi and jack. nothing is more fun. its a challenge in the ocean with all the waves and you feel one with nature. i do worry about hooking a tuna and being towed to cuba... so i avoid big fish. i saw the video with the guy catching the marlin but he was followed with a boat. i would love to do that one day. i will be in southbeach in a few weeks and may do the bay for tarpon and snook. some get well over 100 lbs in there.

Lol being towed to Cuba reminds me of the story "Old man and the sea" . I went to see Kayaks they look great and have seen many using them in area lakes .
If it wasnt for gators would have had one by now but thinking of going with canoe as used them before and ofcourse your higher out of the water.

I have seen pics of Kayak fishermen catching 5/6 foot sharks out by the Keys, etc chances of me doing that are zero lol .
I worry about water predators (this is what happens when you watch to many animal shows) but I certainly would like some way to access the mid lake and regular boat is out of the question .

Have you ever seen sharks while out in your Kayak?

ive seen people fish marlins and tuna etc off em on 15kg stand up gear wih a modified gimbal and reel harness

My old climbing instructer and her husband have caught halibut while trolling from their sea kayaks in the Sound and out of Homer.

I have a kayak but I prefer fishing from my inflatable cataraft.

Both big dogs and better babysitters for his kids and his 2 goats you couldnt find
They didnt like the heat but in cold and or snow they were rockets. Outstanding dogs
