I have fine sand in the tank.
Planetcatfish says max 28 cm for the ornatus, so i guess they get a little bit bigger.
My experience tells me that PlanetCatfish tend to give the maximum sizes of fish, so as to discourage 8 year olds from filling their 10 gallon tanks with red tails.
I have two p.ornatus. They are 18 months old, and have grown considerably in that time, although that growing seems to have slowed down a lot. The larger one is about 6 inches long, the smaller one is 5. They are both well fed, but do not seem to be growing much anymore - if they are it is very, very gradual.
They are great fish, with lots of personality. The bigger one is more laid-back, and hides in her cave all day, but the smaller one is very skittish, racing about the tank now and then when one of the other residences startles her.
Lovely fish. Glad I got them, even if I don't see them that often.
