Keeping a large tank in a unfinished basement?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I had a 55 gal.. and a 125 w/ my red-tailed boa in an unheated basement for a few years and had no problems heating either set-up. I'de prolly invest in an extra heater just to be safe if your main goes out. But it's more precautionary imo then a neccesity.

Here's something I learned the hard way about basements. Many older unfinished basements were built unlevel to help with drainage. Pay extra attention to the levelness of the stand and tank. It gets tricky on unfinished concrete floors and you can start with what appears to be a level set up when empty but shifts when you add water, and then can shift again if you add any heavy stones or decorations.

Take the extra time to ensure the set up is level on uneven concrete floors. Big tanks will come apart at the joints in a matter of weeks.

Insulate the tank. Use foam board, cut to size add to sides and back and bottom. Helped my electric bill.

He is right, I used 1.5" foam from Home Depot to insulate 30 gallon tanks in my garage. I kept them heated with 50 watt heaters during the winter.
