Keeping a Merodontotus tigrinus and TSN together??

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
What do you guys think of the fish??
The pics are not the best but the Adonis is 46-48cm and the Tig is 40cm or so.
I going to pay for them and get them sent down next week.

I can't tell for sure what going on with the tigs nose. Is it normal? For that kind of money (a little steep in my opinion) I'd be demanding good quality pics from every angle.

you guys are funny i have both as well as many other large catfish worth having i've had tsn cat for a year and my tig just under a year and they live together and actual hang together so as long as you feed your fish and have enough space its all good trust me oh and i've had my tig since it was a baby got it from infin aquatics i also gooch, piraiba, and a flash cat they are easy to care for as long as you do water changes that the kill of young or older tigs or and bottom feeders guys do more water changes and medicate your water or invest in uv

I'm not so sure what is "funny" about my experience with my 2.5 year old 32" tsn shredding fish that don't even remotely fit down the hatch... Just giving him first hand experience that these cats can be intense hunters. A one year old tsn is still a big baby. I consider my 2.5 year old a juvenile. The water quality will only be an issue if he let's it. In my experience, anything that is remotely smaller than a TSN is a potential target. I wouldn't take the risk given my experience.

$2900 is alot of money for the 2 fish, Is it because where you live these are very hard to come across or is most of the cost in shipping?

That was my thoughts too. I know different markets occur and what I am
used to in SoCal doesn't always apply elsewhere. However, in my market, that would be considered over priced. Could be area and shipping costs jack up the price significantly.

If you're in the US then that price is way too high in my opinion. Tig's of that size can bring $650 pretty easily but $2900 is just insane. Even shipping east coast to west coast with a fish that size airport to airport would only be about $300-$400 bucks so you'd be looking at a $1000 total.

At adult sizes the TSN will be double that of the Tig I'd agree but I have never had a single problem keeping Tig's with TSN and I've kept TSN to 28" and Tigrinus to 16" in the past in the same tank. I currently have both species housed together without problems. If there is a big size differentiation at smaller sizes I'd say the Tig would be at risk for sure but once the fish are over 16" I think that it becomes less of a problem. Also FWIW Tig's aren't any skinnier than TSN if they are both the same length.

But like Wet said, when you start getting TSN up near the 3ft mark...there are lots of what most consider BIG fish that can end up on the menu.

She's always been a hunter, but used to target things that she could actually swallow (typical of most any catfish). There hasn't been anything in with her for a very long time that she could actually swallow. However, since she hit about the 26" mark, she seems to be testing out what might fit. As she has gotten larger, so has what she is hoping she can eat. I was shocked at what she has tried to eat. She is literally trying to swollow things that just are ridiculous.

All my cats have gone from shy, more chill babies to boiterous, obnoxiously pushy, active juvi's. :hearts: Even in just the last year, it's been amazing to see the change not only in their mass, but more their personalities. It's like they hit that 2 foot mark and they are just different cats. Now that they are all pushing 30" or larger, they are crazy active and interactive. They are hilarious when I've had to get in the water with them.
