Keeping African Cichlids in Brackish setup?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Sounds good, but what about the cichlid lake salt that I've been using? It shows up on the hydrometer as salt water, should I stop using it?
No,if it is for rift lake cichlids then keep using it.What you have sounds very much like what I was referring to in my earlier post and I was always under the impression that the stuff did not add or raise the salinity in the water.I still feel that it does not create true brackish conditions.

The ones you mention are from age Malawi, and I agree with the others, just doing frequent regular water changes is much more important than adding salt.
And whether or not adding a commercial rift lake salt is needed depends on the chemical composition of your tap water.
If its hard and alkaline, I see no reason to add salts.
But if your tap water is soft and mineral free, then it might help a little.

Now I'm curious as to if anyone has ever "experimented" with seeing if African Cichlids such as peacock can actually live in brackish conditions.
I've seen videos on YouTube where people supposedly are keeping African Cichlids in Brackish Water but no updates as to how long they lived in Brackish Water.
I'm almost tempted to setup my smaller 30 gallon buy some marine salt and create brackish conditions and go pick up another peacock to begin it's transition into a Brackish environment..
If only to see if there's a certain salinity they can handle
