keeping algea from the glass

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I use a kitchen sponge, the kind that is half sponge & half scrubby stuff. Just use the scrubby side. As long as your not talking about acrylic, your fine.

The algea that is the problem is the hard to remove cirkels. I tried the razorblades but they are a pain in the ass. Takes you ages to remove all. The mags dont work. I use those kitchen sponges now, but i was a bit anxious for scratches. It is glass, not acrylic.

Use a plastic credit card instead of a razor blade. If its an old unwanted card, you can custom trim one corner to suit your tank corners if you want to be fast.

Just be careful when you get close to the bottom. They only scratches you'll get will be from sand or gravel getting under the scrubby.. If for some reason I touch the bottom with it, I take it off the glass and whish it around to loose any substrate that may have been picked up. I tend to use my fingers at the substrate line. If it's too tuff pull the substrate back a little, use the scrubby and push it back.

Use a rough brillo pad or sponge to get the tough stuff off (NOT with cleaners, of course), and use a mag scraper to get the leftovers. A pleco or algae-eater should get whatever's left behind.

You should read the package on these, they are not safe for aquariums. They have antimicrobials and whatnot in them that can kill your fish.

If you leave them in the tank maybe. Just wash them out first & don't leave them in the tank. I've used them for years as do many other people.
I wouldn't buy one that is labeled antibacterial though..
