My black aro has almost outgrown his tank so in a few months him and my pbass will get my 8'X6' pond in my garage. How high do I need the sides to be above the water level to safely keep the aro in the pond. I know there are known to be jumpers. I was thinking 1.5-2ft above the water level. Is this enough to keep him in there or should I just cover the pond?

2 feet might not even do it.

Making one yourself would be a great idea and not be too hard. I'm going to dig up an example of a cover for an indoor pond.

I saw a show on discovery channel that said/showed video that a big silver aro can take prey off branches 6 feet out of the water...

Thanks for the quick replies. That is exactly what I was afraid of. Just looking at my black aro he lookes like he could easily go a few feet airborn. I would be devistated if I came home to him dead on my floor so a cover it is.

What do you think about this stuff? I could just stretch it over the top and not even have to lower my water level. I was thinking just attaching hooks on the pond to attach the neeting too so I can easily remove it for cleaning. the holes are big enough to see the fish easily and feed them right through it. Will this stuff be safe to use as a cover? Looks good and it's cheap:).

I'd say it be great, just be sure to attach it correctly.

I was thinking just a series of hooks around the pond so I can attach it and stretch it tight but still be able to remove it easily for cleaning. Sounds simple enough, I guess I'll find out shortly how it works.

i wouldnt worry about the aro abandoning ship and dying. Yeah he jumps, but he aint dumb. ive got 2 giant aros in a pond as well, and they never did such a thing. The water is always to the maximum level and the aros have been fine for years.
If the aro is small though, beware for birds that could snap him away...
success with the pond!

I would say a couple feet should be fine. Your aro is likely to jump from being spooked instead of jumping for food. So the jump will be more horizontal and as much elevation will be obtained. But with that said, I wouldn't take any chances and enclose the pond completely.

Good luck and please post pics
