well they are the more aggressive mbuna. I would get one male and some females 3-4 and do a speices only or one male or female and some other mbuna....
Cynotilapia afra
Melanochromis johannii
Metriaclima estherae
Pseudotropheus sp.
look these up should be able to find and come in many colors...
With the correct filtration and plenty of rocks for hiding spots you can easily put 20-30 fish in that tank.
I don't know why people make these fish out to be aggressive. They are not as bad as they are made out to be. I find that tw0 males together with 4+ females is far better thgan a single male with 3-4 females. As long as you have two seperate piles of rocks in the tank they will each try to control a pile and the competition for the females is great as the males tend to stay in full bright colouring. I have a nymber of my species set up like this now. Used to put a single male in with some females. Now they are a lot more active. My Met. mbembe deep males are permanantly in colour.
I would suggest a Cyn Afra species together with Metriaclima estherae and a species or two of the Pseudotropheus species. You could even add in Cyroacara moorii and either Nimbochromis Venestus or Livingstonii.
A synodonyis catfish adds a difference. Clown loaches don't do too badly with the Malawi's.
Do not add a moorii or a Venustus because they will outgrow a 55 gallon tank. They can get like 10" or a bit bigger. They should be kept in a tank of atleast 90 gallons.
well auratus are of the meanest species of mbuna..all mbuna are agressive but this one is very know for beeing of the more aggressive..with melanochromis johani
you can put'em with any mbuna but be sure to overstock you tank to dicipate the agression with all the fish..the more fish you have the less damage a sinlge fish will take.
will my two females (M. auratus) breed with a new male i just added. hes noticeably smaller but not too much. he sorta got picked on by the both of them for the first 20 mins that i added him. now they continue to swim around like hes not there. and if they do breed, what size do they have to be?
is two females enough or does it have to be in a big group?
